Stella’s Take on the Pleasure Beach
The fact that I have never set foot on Blackpool Pleasure Beach does not mean I do not hold it in very high esteem and that I would not defend it from any threat of invasion, other than the invasion of enthusiastic hliday makers. If you can get to see a short film in the series of British Transport Films (BTF) (made to encourage tourism in the mid 20th Century) called ‘Holiday’, then you will see a tremendous evocation of what a holiday in Blackpool may have resembled for anyone working class in the early 1950’s. The Pleasure Beach features greatly, and it certainly does look like a lot of pleasure was had by all. The Pleasure Beach is very close to The Golden Mile – the name given to the Blackpool esplanade. Such terminology is somewhat self-fulfilling; it prepares you for experiences you could not have at home in some dull Midland suburb. ‘Pleasure Gardens’ and ‘Fun Fairs’ are not places to go if you want to weep into your ginger beer or write sorrowful poetry.
